Dear Matt: Sorry for the late response but I really enjoyed looking at your portfolios over the years. Interested to learn that you were influenced by August Sander when you started in photography. Diane Arbus had a german book by him and I translated some of the passages for her when I was in New York. Sorry we couldn’t make to Benicia this year, hopefully next year.

Hi Gernot,
What appealed to me about Sander, was that he documented the trades with his straight on approach. Of course the beautiful black & white prints and the historical context made the photos appealing too. My favorite of that era is still Cartier Bresson though.
I didn’t know you were a translator. I failed when I attempted that profession once. I took too many liberties with words, which would then be called creative writing. 🙂
I would be glad to show you and Gail the prints if you make it out this way some time.
I’m taking a break from photography (matting all those prints and holding the open studio was a lot of effort – my sons couldn’t help this time) and am writing on my stories right now.
Take care,
Matthias
